Menstrual cycles are brought on by changes in hormones, and hormones affect each of us differently. PMDD should be diagnosed by a physician, and in my opinion, a female physician. (Sorry guys, but she has been there, done that.) If you are diagnosed with PMDD by the doctor, she can explain exactly what some patients experience. I have heard that some patients do have severe depression, but again, every person is different.



When the mood changes are worse in the winter I would look to SAD-- seasonal affective disorder. Scientist have linked SAD to lack of sunshine, especially in patients who live in the northern areas of the world.



Again, please find a specialist who can help with the mood swings, depression and other symptoms you (or this person) is going through. Both PMDD and SAD are treatable disorders. Since you are asking the question, I think it's time to find a professional who can help you.

It is only diagnosed PMDD if you have absolutely NO symptoms except right before your period. If you are sad other times of the month, you have depression or bipolar with premenstrual worsening. Many people with depression or bipolar have their moods at least partially influenced by the season. So those folks can benefit from light box treatment like is used for SAD. I have bipolar with bad, bad suicidal depressions during PMS. Also suicidal depressions in the fall and early winter and late winter, and whenever it is overcast more than a couple days (infall, early winter and late winter, it is overcast a lot in Minnesota, where I live).
